Question about the PS5 Portal

With the Portal could I be on vacation and use the Portal to connect to my PSN account and play games or do I have to be close to my console?

I don't see the use of a Portal if it can't do that but better to ask a dumb question than to buy one and find out it can't be used how I need to use it.

At one point the Sony website states it only works when connected to your home WiFi, yet later it says it works with any WiFi connection.

Previously it was the case that the portal only worked on the home WiFi but Sony updated the software so than now it works anywhere with a minimum 5mbps connection (15mbps preferred).
