I'm an old-school gamer. I've played all the original Final Fantasy games on the PS1 and PS2 consoles. The deeper I got into the series the more I learnt there were strategy guides being released.
I've never bought into the idea of buying a strategy guide to complete a game. The thought of buying a strategy guide to see me through a game is just absolutely ridiculous. In other words: Why pay good money for a game only to end up cheating your way through to the end? Does cheating your way through to the end of a game not take away the fun, surprise and mystery of discovering things out for yourself? Strategy guides, hint guides are just not my thing or otherwise what's the point in playing the game in order to have everything handed to you on a silver platter? Nulp! Sorry! That's just not happening in my world.
The last original Final Fantasy game I played was Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. Half way through the game my progress was suddenly cut short having come across a beast that I just could not defeat no matter what weapon or magic I used. At a time when I had no access to the internet, I just could not figure out how to get past this damn beast despite having collected everything and completed every side quest in the game up to that point.
Having been stuck in the game for quite some time I had finally found a strategy guide in the newsagency. Here I'm flicking through the pages with bated breath wanting to know where I went wrong and why I was unable to beat this beast. When I finally discovered the answer I was so angry that is when I decided never to play these games again.
What I learnt was in order to be able to defeat this beast it required a rather special powerful weapon and the only way you could get this weapon was via a respawning chest. It's like, hello, how in the frigging hell was I supposed to know that this one particular chest hides a secret powerful weapon but does not always appear when you open up the chest? There was no in-game hint of such a chest. No NPC made mention of such a chest. No map leading to the chest. No! Instead, PlayStation would have me buy the official strategy guide. That is so wrong on multiple levels. I felt so betrayed. Because there's no telling what other Final Fantasy side quests and puzzles can only be solved via the official strategy guide, that is when I decided to give the whole series the flick.
The year 2006 was the last time I played a Final Fantasy game. Zoom to 2025. Please give me a good reason why I should return to the series? Please tell me why I should begin my adventures with Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and Rebirth? Please tell me right now that in order to complete these games and discover all its hidden secrets that an official strategy guide is not necessary?
